To Live and to Love

Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Deuteronomy 30:19-20.

Day Two: Tune Out January 6, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrsschrage @ 4:59 pm

The “tune out” part of today’s goals will be pretty easily accomplished. I’m stuck in Charlotte until 11 pm. But being stuck in Charlotte means the whole grain diet goes out the window. Unless maybe the deli at Harris Teeter has a whole grain salad option instead of the usual Tuesday sub.

Today’s Questions:

Do you eat in response to stress or emotions?

Yes! I am a stress eater. When I get panicky, the first response I have is to occupy myself with munching. It is unfortunately a family trait. But blaming a habit on family is no way to improve a situation…

What types of foods do you crave?

I crave protein and carbs. Red meat, eggs, bread, potatotes. Sweets usually aren’t what I crave, because I crave sustenance.  I guess there is something to the concept of “comfort foods.”

What, if anything, would you like to change about why or how you eat?

I would like to change to no soda. I drink it much less, but sometimes I crave it when I’m stressed – but immediately after sipping, I regret it. I also liked the suggestion of rice or almond milk as a cow’s milk substitute. I wonder what almond milk tastes like in coffee… I’ve been increasingly lactose intolerant recently. I have a milk allergy but usually I can have dairy in small amounts. Last week I had ice cream for the first time in a while and it felt like it was destroying my stomach.

Footnote: I ended up finding a wild rice/cranberry salad at Harris Teeter for lunch and had chicken and wild rice soup at Panera for dinner. Turned out, a day Charlotte was healthier than I first thought!

Have you ever tried raw milk? Many who cannot tolerate pasteurized milk do fine with raw (such as my husband). It’s also delicious :). Here is a source for Asheville: “Natural Food Choices. Alicia. I’ll check it out, but I think my allergy would still react to raw milk. Because raw or pasteurized it’s still cow’s milk. But thanks for the tip.

Great series of posts. I’m glad you’re doing this–it’s interesting and will give me ideas, get me thinking, etc. 🙂

Oh, and I also enjoyed the pics and year-end-review!!

Yeah, for some the presence of the enzymes is what is needed. For others, milk is milk like you said.

I haven’t made almond milk, but it seems really easy to make (in the blender).
